Saturday Morning Special - Sept 17th

~
Another two-part CHL league preview, a look at goalies in the WHL and the NHL, who played well in Penticton, are Drew Doughty and Kyle Turris getting bad advice and a key prospect for 2012 makes his TPS debut. In short, another busy and interesting edition of The Pipeline Show for your Saturday morning.

First up was the return of our NHL Insider, Daren Millard of Rogers Sportsnet. We talked a lot about the contract status of both Drew Doughty and Kyle Turris and how they are different. Is there an end in sight for the stalemate in L.A. or could this drag out for awhile? And with Turris... how exactly does his 25-point season generate a $4M asking price?? Plus, Leafs goalie James Reimer came up as well, as in, can he repeat last year's success? (Segment 1)

Speaking of goalie, Justin Goldman is the man behind The Goalie Guild, the ridiculously comprehensive website dedicated to netminders. We asked Justin about Calvin Pickard and Tyler Bunz; are they far and away the two best goalies in the WHL right now? Plus who stood out to him during the rookie tournaments that NHL teams took part in? Lastly, Justin's rankings of NHL clubs in regards to goalie development came up, who finished last and why? (Segment 2)

We closed out hour #1 with our 2012 Draft Prospect: Derrick Pouliot. The Portland Winterhawks rearguard played for Canada at the Ivan Hlinka tournament and has returned to the WHL ready to help his club back to the WHL finals once again. We asked him how he thinks he differs from the pack of high-end defenders available to NHL clubs this June. (Segment 3)

Our two-part OHL season preview began with the voice of the Belleville Bulls and Team Canada, Jack Miller. Jack told us why he thinks it's a dog fight between Niagara, Ottawa and Oshawa in the league's Eastern conference this year but also spent time talking about the Sudbury Wolves, Barrie Colts and his Bulls. (Segment 4)

Taking the reins of the Western Conference was Mike Farwell who covers the Kitchener Rangers. With Plymouth, London and Sarnia considered favorites, where does that leave the defending league champs from Owen Sound? (Segment 5)

Lastly, John Sexsmith from Global Sports here in Edmonton talked to us about the Penticton tournament that featured the Oilers, Canucks, Flames, Sharks and Jets. We asked John who stood out to him and he rattled off a few guys like Nugent-Hopkins, Lander, Pitlick and Scheifele. (Segment 6)
