Tuesday Recap: May 24th

~
With the Memorial Cup well underway, the NHL Entry Draft and the NHL Combine getting closer every day, there was plenty to talk about this week on The Pipeline Show. Dean was away for this episode (say goodbye to that short-lived iron man streak, buddy) but I was joined by a diverse group of guests to make the show interesting once again.

We kicked off the program with the return of Dmitry Chesnokov, the Russian scribe from Yahoo! who was able to give us a lot of information on key Russians for the 2011 Draft. Vlad Namestnikov of the London Knights, Alex Khokhlachev from the Windsor Spitfires as well as U18 star Nikita Kucherov. We also touched on 2012 with Nail Yakupov and Mikhail Grigorenko. Plus, we covered Dmitry's recent story on the potential return of one Alex Radulov to the Nashville Predators and the NHL.

Up next was the man behind OHL Prospects, Brock Otten. Brock's recent list of OHL players from the 2009 draft that may return to the 2011 pool was touched on as was his recent top 50 list. Was it easy for him to put Gabriel Landeskog at the head of the OHL pack? What about a sleeper pick for the 2nd round?

Closing out the first hour tonight was Moose Jaw Warriors rearguard Joel Edmundson. The 6'4 blueliner is admittedly nervous about the interview process at the NHL Combine but after some warming up he relaxed in our conversation. He told us about his season in Moose Jaw, if he's watching the Memorial Cup and if so, can he cheer for the team that eliminated his club from the WHL post season? We also discussed his partner Dylan McIlrath and more.

The second hour began with the return of a former 2009 Guest Player Blogger, Ethan Werek. Drafted by New York but recently traded to and signed by the Phoenix Coyotes, Ethan had plenty to talk about. We also spent a great deal of time discussing the Kingston Frontenacs and what transpired this year with players such as Erik Gudbranson and Philippe Grubauer. Was coach Doug Gilmour the problem for the late season collapse? Are half the stories about the organization true? This was must listen radio.

Finally, Sam Cosentino joined us minutes after the Kootenay Ice defeated Saint John in overtime at the Memorial Cup. Sam talked to us in detail about the game and the two teams involved. Which players have stood out thus far in the tournament and who still hasn't played up to expectations? What will happen the rest of the way? Does Tomas Jurco remind him of a certain forward of the Edmonton Oilers? We covered a lot of ground in a short amount of time with Sam.
