3 Year Extension for Don Lucia

~
There has been a lot of speculation about the future of Minnesota Golden Gopher Head Coach Don Lucia. The Gophers will be spectators at the National Championship for a 3rd straight year and after getting swept by Alaska-Anchorage, they will also miss the WCHA Final Five for a second straight season.

So what's next for Lucia?

Despite a 5th place WCHA regular season finish with a record of 13-10-5 it appears Lucia is getting a 3 year extension on his contract (he has one more after this season) and the announcement could take place today.

The new deal paves the way for Don's son Mario to commit to the Golden Gophers and follow in his older brother Tony's skate strides. Mario is the top Minnesota high school prospect for the 2011 draft but hadn't made a decision about his college of choice. That decision should also be coming shortly now that his dad will be behind the bench with some security.

Don Lucia has won a couple of National Championships with the Gophers, but just how popular he is with fans and alumni is questionable. TPS has been told there may be a petition circulating by the alumni to oust him after 12 seasons at the helm.
