2009 Draft Performers of the Week - Mar 1/09

Sports Management Worldwide (SMWW) / International Scouting Services (ISS) 2009 Draft Prospect Performers of the Week presented by the Pipeline Show & Hockey Now ending Sunday, March 1, 2009.

Each week, International Scouting Services (ISS), Sports Management Worldwide (SMWW), Hockey Now, and The Pipeline Show recognize the Top Draft Eligible player from each of the WHL, OHL, QMJHL, & USHL leagues for the upcoming 2009 NHL Entry Draft based on their play over the course of the week. Players are nominated and the selected by graduates of the SMWW Hockey GM & Scouting with each of the winners receiving a gift acknowledging their selection.

Ontario Hockey League – Alex Friesen, Niagara Ice Dogs

Alex Friesen wins this week’s award after scoring once and adding 4 assists in 3 games alongside a plus-5 rating. Friesen has been a streaky player throughout this season, which has included numerous multi-game point streaks. Friesen is known as a hard working player who will often play against the opposition’s top line.

Western Hockey League – Stefan Elliott, Saskatoon Blades

Stefan Elliott wins the WHL award after posting 3 assists and a plus-2 rating in 3 wins for the Blades one over Moose Jaw and two against Brandon. Elliott currently sits 7th amongst WHL defensemen in scoring with 15 goals and 37 assists in 65 games so far. Elliott is a mobile defenseman who moves the puck well under pressure.

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League – Benjamin Casavant, PEI Rocket

Benjamin Casavant is this week’s winner in the QMJHL after scoring 6 goals and adding 2 assists in 3 games. Casavant, a native of St. Hyacinthe, PQ has 38 goals and 72 points to be amongst the top 15 in QMJHL scoring. Casavant is a competitive player and has good hockey sense.

United States Hockey League – Mike Lee, Fargo Force

Goaltender Mike Lee wins his second award of the season after winning two games and posting a 1.00 GAA in those games. This week’s wins came against Sioux City and Sioux Falls and allowed the Force to remain ahead of both teams in the USHL’s West Division. Lee is a technically sound goaltender who has the ability to make the big save when necessary.
